Makita 12V Cordless Vacuum, LC09Z LC09A1 Packs A Punch

Makita has introduced a new cordless 12V vacuum with the LC09 which is part of their rapidly expanding CXT lineup. The LC09Z model reflects a baretool, while the LC09A1 models reflects a kit with a 2.0 ah battery (and charger).

Being a 12V vacuum, the Makita LC09 is very small, compact and lightweight at only 18 kg with battery making it extremely portable. It weighs in at just 2kg, making it easy to carry one-handed. They also have a shoulder strap that makes it even easier to transport.

The thing that really impressed me about this vacuum is its 46 CFM suction power. This is comparable to Milwaukees cordless 9 Liters M18 vac. However, keep in mind that the Milwaukee vacuum is at 18V and this Makita is at 12 volts. Its suction numbers are even more impressive. Theyve basically made it just as powerful (on paper) with less volts!

Although the runtime figures are impressive at 33 minutes per charge for a 2.0-ah battery, this is still not its highest setting. The above mentioned Milwaukee M18 vac got 14 minutes of runtime at full power (it only has one speed setting, max) with an 18V 4.0 ah battery. Thats a total of 72 wh and about 5.14 wh per minute of runtime. If I run the same calculation of runtime figure at max output for Makitas vacuum with a 2.0 ah battery with 21.6 wh (10.8v x 2ah) is done, it should theoretically get around 4.2 minutes of runtime at full speed. Of course a larger 4.0 ah battery should double that runtime figure.

Makita markets this powerful little 12V vacuum for use with auto upholstery. It may sound like a good idea, but it is not for me. The Makita 12V should be as powerful as my Milwaukee M18 9 Liters vacuum. It is very powerful, but leaves much to be desired when it comes to upholstery. Although my Milwaukee M18 9 Liters vacuum can do the job when it comes to upholstery, it is slower than a larger plug-in wet dry vac. That’s why I always choose a larger plug-in vac for vehicles upholstery. The Makita 12V model’s maximum speed will take only a few minutes. If you don’t have enough batteries, it wont be fast enough. Otherwise, you would have to stop too often to change batteries. Unless you are into this sort of thing.

It has 2 buttons for operation. One button cycles through the 3 power settings, while the other is an off button. This is how their 18V random orbitsander works. This little vac also doubles as a blower for blowing dust off your work bench and other things and comes with 4 nozzle attachments. It uses a premium hose which is flexible and can be extended when necessary.

I believe that where this vacuum excels in is the same as most portable cordless vacs which is at small pickups here and there and nothing large and continuous, especially not where continuous use of max suction is needed. This vacuum will be a great addition to any Makita 12V CXT tool collection.
