Dewalt has just released a new concept for recipsaw blades with the newDewalt Breakaway Recrocating Saw Blades.
They basically took the same concept of snap blade utility knives and incorporated this into a reciprocating saw blade.
Usually most of the wear of a blade happens near the shoe and the blades snap just beyond that to expose the part of the blade closer to the tip that still has plenty of life left thus extending the life of a blade if you can reuse it after it wears out.
Dewalt claims that their perforated snap design does not affect the blade’s integrity. My only concern is how short the left over part of the blade will be. On their 15 cm recip blades, the left over blade essentially becomes a standard 10 cm blade which isnt very long. The leftover section won’t cut 2x lumber, but it can still be used for thin stock such as drywall, small diameter pipes, and plywood. The blades have a longer breakaway blade of 23 cm and a 15 cm residual blade, which are much more useful. This is the one I would choose.
These are extremely affordable and low in price. The only place I could find that sells these at the time of writing was Lowes and they have them for for a 5 pack of six inch blades, for a 3 pack of 23 cm blades, and for an 8 pack with six 15 cm blades and two 23 cm blades, so these are actually a better deal than buying individual blades, that and you essentially get two blades per blade when you take into count the snap off section of the blade.
